AK Black Currant is a small, woman owned business based in Anchorage, Alaska that specializes in original hand-painted home décor items. All items for sale are carefully painted with high quality acrylic paint by me the owner and artist, Janelle Sikorski.

I paint on everyday and repurposed objects, such as wood planks, terracotta pots, rocks, and pieces of furniture. The intense and varied colors of the wild Alaskan waters and skies inspire my color choices. I see natural objects as unique individuals; each with their own personality. I enjoy sharing their stories with others.

I will have many wonderful creations to share with you as I continue to develop, grow, and refine AK Black Currant. However, I am excited to announce that my first product line focuses on plant accessories, specifically hand-painted terracotta planter pots and handmade wooden plant stands.

Everything Starts at Home!

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines home as:

Noun: 1) One’s place of residence. 2) A familiar or usual setting. 3) Place of origin.

To me, the word home transcends a physical structure or location. Home is a symbol of security and comfort. It can also be a place to dream, create, and entertain. A place to heal, recover, or hide. My art is driven by my journey to find home in the Alaskan wilderness. In fact, I refer to myself as being wildly domesticated! It is the tension between wanting to live in the wild where I feel most at home, and the requirements of modern society to conform to the ways of domestication that defines my creations.

It took moving to the Alaskan wilderness to find home.
